NEW YORK CITY STUDENTS! DO NOT THROW AWAY YOUR EXPIRED METROCARDS!
This Monday, we are getting new student metrocards from our schools. This gives us students a chance to use our old metrocards to make a statement to the State and to the MTA.
Use a permanent marker to write your own message to the MTA and the State about them cutting student metrocards. Whether it is about you, a friend, or a family member, make sure to let them know how losing student metro cards will impact your life . The NYC Student Union is organizing to collect either in or in front of your school. We are then going to use them as written testimonies at a public hearing this March. This is our chance to give a voice to students like us who are going to be heavily affected by this. However, please keep these messages clean, polite, and serious. This IS NOT meant to be an attack on the MTA. If we can get enough metrocards, we can give the city a short look at how badly these budget cuts will hurt students and their families, and we can really make a difference.
Since this is happening this Monday it is VERY important that we get the word out quickly. Invite all of your friends to the facebook group so that we can get as many metrocards as possible.
If anyone would like to help with collecting metro cards, providing materials, or getting the word out, please contact us at studentunion.nyc@gmail.com

Hello everyone!
Unfortunately, the student union is no longer being provided with our usual meeting space in the United Federation of Teacher’s building.
We are looking for another space, but for the next few weeks there are no regular meetings.
Please check back, we will post as soon as we have another space.
Thank you!
STUDENT UNION FIGHTS THE PROPOSAL TO CUT STUDENT METROCARDS
CALLING ALL STUDENTS: TAKE ACTION ON TUESDAY, JANUARY 5TH
Recently the MTA made a proposal to cut the funding for student metrocards starting next year. If the proposal is passed, this will mean New York City families spending another $1000 dollars per child on top of their already expensive life styles. The elimination of student metrocards could also lead to a higher percentage in Public School drop out rates, and would force many students back to their zone schools.
DON’T LET THIS HAPPEN!
Come join us and Christine Quinn, the speaker for the city council, as we fight the proposed elimination of student metro cards. On Tuesday, January 5th, 2010 Quinn is holding an outdoor press conference in front of Martin Luther King High School (Amsterdam and 65th st.) where she will speak to various news stations and the general public about why the city council is against this proposal. Other city council members and officials will be there with her. They have a lot more leverage then we do as students, so supporting them as they support us could further our cause in ways that we can not do alone.
She needs students to stand with her to show their dedication to this issue, hand out flyers, hold signs and get signatures for the city council’s petition against the MTAs proposal.
Students should arrive by 7:15am. We know its early, but its one day so just do it. We asked if they could do it after school, but they wanted conference to be broadcasted on as many news stations as possible that afternoon.

Students who are coming should RSVP directly to Nick Rolf, from the Community Outreach Unit of Speaker Quinn’s office.
